Hi, I am John

John Derr

Associate Software Engineer at Capital One

I build software at two extremes: the massive scale of a Fortune 100 bank and the bleeding edge of open-source AI research.

By day, I am a Software Engineer at Capital One, where I focus on developing cloud-native applications and modernizing financial services through high-performance architecture. As a member of the Capital One Quarkus Center of Practice, I don’t just write code-I help shape the organizational standards for the next generation of Java development, ensuring that our systems are as efficient and scalable as possible.

By night, I dive into the internals of Leela Chess Zero, managing complex reinforcement learning pipelines and researching network architectures to challenge the limits of machine intelligence. My work with the LC0-Odds project focuses on the intersection of adversarial training and human expertise, creating engines capable of overcoming extreme material disadvantages to defeat some of the strongest players in the world.

I operate at the intersection of enterprise reliability and research-driven innovation. Whether I am architecting a production API for a global financial institution or training a neural network to beat a Grandmaster down a Queen, I am driven by a singular obsession: pushing software to its absolute limit.

Projects

Leela Chess Zero
Leela Chess Zero
Developer June 2025 - Present

An open-source chess engine that uses neural networks and reinforcement learning to play at a high level. I manage the reinforcement learning training pipeline and contribute to network architecture research. I also contribute to the Leela Chess Zero - Odds project, building engines that win at a material disadvantage (odds play) using adversarial training against human opponents. My networks have gained over 70 Elo through improved training techniques, and the strongest odds nets have defeated Hikaru Nakamura (down a Queen) and other Grandmasters (down a Knight or Rook). Built with C++, CUDA, and Python/JAX.

Games Database
Games Database
Owner Dec 2024 - June 2025

A simple way to visualize the games that Wisconsin Union Directorate’s Games Committee owns. Built with React and Spring Boot.

CAE-ManageIP-Rest
